Mastering Cabinet Overlays: Inset, Full, and Partial Styles Explained for Your Dream Kitchen

Hey there, bestie! Let’s talk cabinets – specifically, cabinet door overlays. If you’re planning a kitchen renovation, you’ve probably noticed how many cabinet options are out there. It can feel like a lot, but don’t worry – I’ve got your back! Today, I’ll break down the three main types of cabinet overlays: inset, full overlay, and partial overlay. Knowing the difference can make choosing your dream kitchen cabinets so much easier. Let’s dive in!

Inset Doors: Classic and Elegant

Inset doors are like the little black dress of cabinetry: timeless, chic, and oh-so-stylish. These doors sit flush with the cabinet frame, creating a smooth and seamless look. They’re perfect if you’re aiming for that classic, handcrafted vibe that’s been making a big comeback.

With inset doors, you can choose either concealed or exposed hinges, and for a bit of extra flair, you can add a beaded detail to the frame. While they’re undeniably gorgeous, they do come with a higher price tag – usually about 15% to 30% more than overlay doors. Since inset cabinetry is typically custom-made, it’s a fabulous option if you’re looking to invest in a kitchen that’s both functional and stunning.

Cabinetry 101: What are cabinet overlays?

When you decide to renovate your kitchen the choices for cabinets can seem endless.  There are a wide variety of cabinet colors, door styles, and wood options to choose from.  Today I am going to explain the differences between the types of cabinet door overlay styles and explain what each term means.  There are three basic overlay types: inset, full overlay, and partial overlay.  The differences in the door overlay types really determine the look and function of the cabinet, and can even be a determining factor in the overall price of the cabinets.

Inset Doors

An inset cabinet door is set into the cabinet frame and is flush with the face frame when the door is closed, as can be seen in the picture below.  With this type of door, the hinges can either be concealed or exposed and can be embellished by adding a beaded detail to the frame.  This traditional look is indicative of fine craftsmanship that was typical in the Georgian and Victorian periods, but is making a comeback and becoming one of the latest trends in home cabinetry.  Though it is very appealing due to its simple elegance it typically is only available through customer cabinet lines, and generally costs 15% - 30% more than cabinets with overlay doors.

Full Overlay

Cabinets with full overlay doors are currently the most common type of cabinets sold.  In a full overlay cabinet, the door lays on top of the cabinet frame and overlays the entire face of the cabinet box.  When the doors are closed there is only a ¼” gap between doors which creates a consistent appearance, and always has a concealed hinge.   This type of overlay offers a similar appearance to inset doors without the additional cost.  The other appeal is they can give you more style options than an inset door. Full overlay cabinets can have slab front doors that give a more modern look, Shaker style doors for a more transitional look, or a traditional look with a raised center panel.

 Examples of Full Overlay Cabinets

Transitional       Modern

Full Overlay: Sleek and Versatile

Now, if you’re after a more modern or transitional look, full overlay doors might just be your new best friend. These doors cover the entire cabinet frame, leaving only a tiny 1/4-inch gap between them when closed. The result? A clean, streamlined appearance that’s perfect for any style.

Full overlay cabinets are super versatile. Want a minimalist vibe? Go for slab-front doors. Prefer something a bit more classic? Shaker-style doors have got you covered. Or maybe you’re into traditional charm – raised center panels can give you that. Plus, full overlay cabinets are generally more budget-friendly than inset doors while still giving you that high-end look. Win-win!

Partial Overlay: The Classic Choice

Partial overlay doors are a tried-and-true option, often seen in kitchens over the years. These doors sit on top of the cabinet frame but don’t cover it completely, leaving part of the frame visible. While they may not offer the seamless look of full overlay or inset doors, they’re often more cost-effective and can be a great choice for homeowners on a budget. Plus, they’re available in a variety of styles to suit your taste.

Choosing the Right Overlay for You

Your kitchen should reflect your personal style, and the right cabinet overlay plays a big role in that. Whether you’re drawn to the tailored elegance of inset doors, the sleek versatility of full overlays, or the traditional charm of partial overlays, there’s an option for everyone – and every budget.
